As credit card rates continue to climb, more people are unable to pay off their creditor card debts. If your spouse is in such a bind but you are debt-free, then there is chance you are still obligated to pay off your spouse’s debts.
Even if you and your spouse are not joint cardholders on the debt, debt collectors could still force you to use your assets to pay off the debt. In such circumstances, debt collectors typically take the debt case to court, where a judge may order the debtor to use his or her assets to pay off the debt.
These assets could include assets owned by both spouses, meaning you will be partially responsible for paying off your spouse’s debt.
If you or your spouse is struggling with debt, contact the Milwaukee debt negotiation lawyers of the DeLadurantey Law Office, LLC, at 414-377-0518.

As more Wisconsin homeowners struggle to pay off their mortgages, foreclosure filings in Wisconsin set a one-month record. In July, there were 2,729 filings, a 52% increase from July 2008, according to ForeclosureAlarm.com
The previous record high of 2,706 occurred last November. Economists cite rising unemployment as the main driver of increased foreclosures. Although the state employment rate figures for July have not been released, the unemployment rate was 9.2%.
