Personal bankruptcies drop in 2011

Posted on January 9th, 2012 No Comments

A recent analysis from the National Bankruptcy Research Center shows that personal bankruptcies decreased in 2011.  Last year, 1.35 million people in the U.S. filed for personal bankruptcy–a 12 percent decrease from the 1.5 million personal bankruptcies filed in 2010.

Based on this information, approximately 1 in every 175 Americans filed for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy in 2011.  17 percent fewer Chapter 7 bankruptcies and 25 percent fewer Chapter 13 bankruptcies were filed in the U.S. last year.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy and Chapter 13 bankruptcy are the most frequently filed types of bankruptcy.  Under Chapter 7 bankruptcy, individuals liquidate some of their assets to pay off their debts, and under Chapter 13 bankruptcy, filers create a repayment plan to repay creditors over a certain time period.

Former billionaire Sean Quinn has filed for personal bankruptcy in Belfast, Ireland.  The personal bankruptcy filing states that Quinn owes $3.86 billion to the Irish Bank Resolution Center.

Quinn was once the richest man in Ireland with a personal worth of around $6 million.  The businessman earned his money by selling gravel and sand from a farm his father owned.  This business turned into a billion-dollar mining manufacturing business.  In addition, the billionaire worked in real estate and insurance.

When the nation’s economy and property market began to suffer in 2008, unfortunately, some risky investments Quinn had made became worthless.

Studies show increase in seniors filing for bankruptcy

Posted on August 9th, 2011 No Comments

Several recent studies into the bankruptcy filings in the U.S. show that the number of seniors filing for bankruptcy is increasing.

From 8 years ago, the percentage of seniors that file for bankruptcy increased by approximately 3.5 percent, according to a study conducted at the University of Michigan Law School.

Another study found that the demographic of people 65-years old and older made up 8.3 percent of the total number of bankruptcies filed in the U.S. in 2009.  In 2006, only 7.8 percent of all bankruptcies filed were filed by people 65-years old and older.

“While health issues and medical debts are also contributing to bankruptcy filings by the elderly, credit card debt among the elderly has also risen, with a median of $22,562 being owed to credit card companies among filers 65 years and older,” states a study conducted in Boston.
