Beware of Credit Repair Scams

20747872_sWhen you are facing financial troubles, the last thing you need is to worsen your situation by being scammed. Unfortunately, there are numerous con artists out there trying to lure you in and take advantage of you. One common area for scams is the credit repair industry.

According to the Federal Trade Commission website, you’ll know you’re dealing with credit repair fraud if a company:

  • insists you pay them before they do any work on your behalf
  • tells you not to contact the credit reporting companies directly
  • tells you to dispute information in your credit report — even if you know it’s accurate
  • tells you to give false information on your applications for credit or a loan
  • doesn’t explain your legal rights when they tell you what they can do for you

You should also avoid companies that promise a “new credit identity.” Promises that they can hide your bad credit history or bankruptcy filing if you pay them a fee are false promises that can get you into big trouble. These companies often provide you with a nine-digit number that looks like a Social Security number, but they call it by a different name, and tell you to apply for credit using this new number (rather than using your own Social Security number). They may lie and tell you it is legal, but it is a scam. Typically the number provided to you is a stolen Social Security number, often taken from a child. The scammer has involved in you in fraud and identity theft, both of which could result in you facing costly fines or even jail time.
